cot to bed transition - not gone well

DS is 20mo. Until last week he slept in his cot. He's never gone down to sleep well but we've generally got him down by 8. He could self settle although if he's really tired he sometimes feeds to sleep.

Last week he learned how to climb out of his cot so we moved him into a bed.

Night 1 he spent 2 hours not settling and then woke at midnight and 2-3
Night 2 he fed to sleep and woke at 2
Night 3 he slept on the floor by the door and woke 3-5
Night 4 he slept on the floor by the door but slept through
...
Tonight he finally went to sleep at about 9:30.

His bedtime routine hasn't changed - tea@5, bath@6, books, milk, lullaby, in bed for final story about 7:15.

He still has a nap - usually after lunch but may be earlier if he's in the back pack or the car. Today's nap was late and he didn't go down until nearly 3. I woke him before 4:30 but it was probably a bit late.

What do we do to get the child to sleep in his bed at a reasonable time?

I find good night time sleeping is directly affected by daytime naps. Adjusting the time and length of the day time sleep can GREATLY improve the night time sleep. Children this age usually need at least 5 hours between waking up from their day time sleep until they are ready to tuck in for the night.

Try adjusting the daytime nap and see what happens. It takes time. Does he have a comfort toy or blanket to sleep with? I find this helps also.
