White Noise

Just a curiosity really...

DS sleeps with white noise in the background. It started when he was tiny and was very very unsettled. We found the hoover soothed him slightly so went with it. I found an app on iTunes which has various different white noises and the oscillator fan noise sounds just like our hoover. He has slept with it ever since (6m nearly) and doesn't sleep at all well without it.

So,

  1. How many of you rely on/have relied on white noise for dc sleep
  2. How long for?

Just interested I guess as I would quite like my iPad back one day

I used it for both of mine and I'd say they were fine without it from about 2.
Now, however, if ds(3) wakes up I have to do the whole drawing circles on his hand bit from the start of ITNG: "There's someone I know..." Think I'd prefer the white noise back!

Kafri · 01/06/2013 21:52

Lol, I've got the whole ITNG part to come. I don't mind the white noise to be fair, and if it helps him to sleep then it's all good.

When it came to it ok so i've a fair while to go yet did you have to wean them off it, or cold turkey, or what???

Can't remember when exactly I stopped using it or why, but DS now 21mo and must have been at least 6 months ago.

I think with dd we'd gone on holiday and didn't have the CD. With DS the CD player stopped working.

I stopped using it when DS was 8 months. It happened by accident, we were staying with the in laws and they didn't have a radio (I use my DAB radio set in between stations, this means I don't have to give up my phone) and he slept fine without it. Pure fluke that I found out he could sleep without it...

DS is 6 months old. We've used white noise from being born. Now it is intermittent. He's just emerged from the other side of the 6 month sleep regression. He was swaddled and rocked to sleep with white noise since birth. The last 2 days he has learned to self settle, without a swaddle, and with no white noise!

We have used the white noise less lately - just if we can't get him to go off and he is obviously tired. Most useful from 5am really!

I use white noise, it's on my iPhone which seems to now live in LO's bedroom. It's an album from iTunes but I tend to use the fan noise each time. I put it on quite loudly for the beginning of naps and whilst I hold him, then I turn it down a bit when I put him in his cot. Today I've turned it down more as it seems to be keeping him awake, I'm not sure if that's a sign he soon won't need it. I hope so, I'll need my phone at work with me soon!

At night I only use it if he's unsettled, he's so tired by bedtime he falls asleep as soon as he's down so I haven't needed the white noise then.

I'll keep going for the time being...

We have the app on my iPad which has technically become DS's iPad now Also have it on my phone and DH's phone too so we're never without, lol

My lo is 6 months and just has it for day naps oddly. Never at night unles he wakes around 4 or 5 I put it on so he's not disturbed by early street noise. I've contemplated stopping it as he's starting nursery in a few weeks but I don't want to make life more difficult for myself at home lol so I'm just going with it until he doesn't seem to need it. xx

CarlyRose80 · 06/06/2013 14:41

And just for the record, my iPad now lives in my sons cot too!!

ItsallFeegle · 06/06/2013 14:48

My DS is 6 months old today! Can't believe it!

Anyway, to your question Grin

I have;

Ewan the Dream Sheep (lovely but only lasts 20 mins at a time).

At least 4 apps on my iPhone - including continuous womb sounds.

And my favourite? YouTube - there are lots of classical music for babies videos that can last up to 2 or 3 hours.

I plug the phone in and leave it playing but I co sleep with DS, and I secretly know for a fact believe DS isn't all that arsed and it's more for my enjoyment.
