Self Soothing

My baby is 15 weeks and has on occasion (very rarely) fallen asleep by himself at night but he doesn't sleep through the night. In fact he sometimes wakes more frequently than if he was nursed to sleep. Does self soothing guarantee sleeping through the night? He was sleeping for at least 5 hours from about 11. Now we put him down earlier he generally goes from about 8.30 till 1.30 then might go till 5 or 6 but more recently has been going till 4 then till 6 and then till 7 or 8. I think he is teething so it might be this that's waking him up but I thought when he fell asleep sucking his thumb the other night that it might = a good night's sleep, no such luck he was awake 2 hours later! I was considering trying to do it more often but I don't want to try and battle it out with him if it makes no difference anyway. Are there other people that nurse there babies to sleep and they sleep through the night? Also I can't get him to nap in the day without rocking/pushing him in the pram. I know I have created bad habits but I'm too exhausted to spend 2 hours everyday trying to get him to sleep for each nap so I just default to what I know will work. I can't bring myself to let him cry himself too sleep, just seems wrong.

I nurse mine to sleep and he sleeps through most nights these days...but he's 14 months old.
I've always fed to sleep. He didn't sleep through 'til he was 11mths - but I didn't sleep-train him.
Bad habits, schmabits, I say!

Mine generally sleeps ok, 15 weeks old and always self soothes to sleep at bedtime with a feed he's FF. he wakes around 2am for nothing except his dummy Back, and I have to pop it back in and he falls back right away. He then wakes at 5am for his first feed of the day. Without the dummy he'd probably work himself up into a cry but he does know how to go to sleep on his own. Saying that it doesn't always work as if he's over tired he will fight it and sometimes I have to Shuss and pat.
