How much daytime sleep for 16 month old?

Pre Xmas I thought we had it cracked. He was sleeping 1.5hr at 11am and then 7-6.30 at night.

Since Xmas though his naps are never longer than 45 mins and he has started waking earlier and earlier (5am). It's driving me insane!

I'm sure he isn't getting enough sleep as he wakes tired and grumpy in the morning and from his nap, but I can't convince to go to sleep for longer.

He is at CM most days and so only has one sleep there, she is quite vague about how long he sleeps there but I can't see it being any longer there.

I've tried pushing the nap later and earlier but didn't seem to help. Same with pushing bedtime earlier than later.

Is it possible he only needs 45mins?

Any tips of how I can encourage him to sleep longer?

Times like this I wish I was a SAHM so I could get a proper routine sorted. Dreading 5am tomorrow

45mins is a bit on the short side for his age really & the fact he's waking grumpy & tired suggest he needs more sleep. How long did you try the later nap for? If only a few days then i would def give it another try.

My ds also used to wake early & his naptime was also 11am. What i found sorted us out was to slowly push the nap later by 15mins per week until it started at 12.30pm. Its not a quick fix, nothing is going to change in a couple of days so you have to be prepared to see it through. it will take around 6 weeks, but it should lead to an improvement in his wakeup time. Once he's sleeping a bit longer overnight, & his nap is that bit later, you should find that it starts to lengthen. Around 2hrs is about right at his age. Just a thought though, you say he is with cm most days - does she do structured naps at home in cot, or does he have to nap on the go wherever she happens to be? If its the latter you might struggle to achieve a nap as long as 2hrs, as there may be too many distractions/disturbances. If his nap doesnt get any longer, the best thing you could do is put him to bed super early ie 6pm rather than 7. This will help prevent him getting overtired & he should sleep longer at night as a result. Hth.

My 16 month old naps for an hour at the very most, usually for around 45 mins around midday - he goes to bed at 7 and wakes at 7-8am ish, he wakes one or two times a night for milk
