New cot mattress

DC2 is due in June and I have read somewhere that I will need to buy a new mattress for the cot after this has being used by DD. It is clean and has being used for about 16 months but never stored anywhere etc. Is this really necessary as it cost a bloody fortune first time round!!!

I reused dd's mattress for ds as it was in good condition and it had a removable washable cover and the mattress itself was waterproof and able to be cleaned.

SIDS says this:

It is very important that your baby?s mattress is kept clean and dry. Ideally you should buy a new mattress for each new baby. If you are not able to do this, use the one you have, as long as it was made with a completely waterproof cover and has no tears, cracks or holes. Clean and dry it thoroughly. Check that the mattress is in good condition; is flat and firm, not soft; fits the cot without any gaps; and doesn?t sag.

Thats great, this one has a washable cover and as I said it's in fab condition so I think I will re-use it. Thanks for the info Xmas Grin

I'm planning to use our cot mattress for baby 3. It was v expensive, pocket sprung (nothing was too good for PFB) and has a zip off washable cover that goes in 60 degree wash.

No sign of sagging there (wish I could say the same...)

Hahaha Mummyof3tobe.

Thats kind of my point really because the mattress was really exspensive and so it would seem a real shame to throw it as its still in excellent condition!

I read the advice posted above and decided that as we were able to, I would replace the mattress for ds2.

Ds1's was in good condition and had washable covers so I offered it on Freecycle. I thought long and hard about doing that, if it wasn't good enough for our dc2, why should someone else use it for their child, but it was advertised as used but in good condition and was taken in the end by a very grateful couple.
