Disruptive sleep due to Potty Training

Evening all. I am hoping that someone may be able to help with a sleep problem. Our little one is 2.5 and has always been a good sleeper. A month or so ago we started potty training which went really well apart from it seems to have had an effect on his ability to settle when put to bed. During the first week of PT he would ask to get out and do a number 2 as soon as we put him in his cot. As we didn't want to discourage the asking for the potty we would get him out and let him go. I think he quickly realised that this was an easy way to get more time with us, so we changed the tactic and insisted that he try and do a number 2 before his bath, 'just like big boys do'. This satisfied us that he had been or tried so we could say no to his requests to get out of his cot and justify them to him. Ever since he cries a lot when going to sleep and wants us to stay in the room with him. A few times we have sat in the chair in the corner of the room but we don't want to start a new habit. It now takes us a good hour or more to settle him from the time he goes into his bed even when he is shattered. Has anyone else found that PT started a change in sleep and if so how do you deal with it? Many Thanks.
