co-sleeping - what do I do on holiday?

DF is desperate that I should visit him and my mum (who has dementia but isn't yet quite bad enough to be in a home). He wants me to stay there ( DH can't come because of work) and has a work colleague who he says can lend him a travel cot. BUT we co-sleep at home and I don't think DS (who will be four months by then) will sleep in a strange cot in a strange house. There is no double bed and I did think of pulling the single mattress onto the floor for both of us - however that mattress is 27 years old, would that be ok?

Thoughts/ideas much appreciated. I'm dreading the whole thing as a week in a house with my mum would be stressful enough, let alone with a small baby!

The easiest is push the bed against the wall, although you have to be happy with how it fits against the wall, that the gap is plugged between the bed and the wall. My DD never had any problems being in new places because of cosleeping!

Ooo glad I saw this, we are going on hols tomorrow and currently cosleeping and worried how it will workout. Sleep is currently a battle ground - 4 month regression.. Good to hear you've had no problems invader.

OP could you take a double air mattress?

I always slept with DD2 in the crock of my arm on the very edge of the bed and she never fell out so it wouldn't have bothered me.

Strange thing is that she does fall out of bed when on her own.

She's 11 and reports having a bad dream and ending up on the floor, she's got a double bed!

I'm new to cosleeping but I bought a lindam bed guard from Argos yesterday so that I'm not trapped up against the wall in our double bed but DS can't fall out! It's a mesh fabric guard that just pushes under the mattress and works a treat...it folds down easily for travel too... Could that work for you?

Thanks for the ideas. The bed in question raises/lowers and thus has a gap between the mattress and the bed frame. The wall next to the bed curves and the bed has legs and a headboard that stick out so you can't get it right next to the wall. I lost so much stuff down the side of the bed as a child for just that reason! I think I'm mostly concerned about the mattress age, since you're supposed to get new mattresses for cots and moses baskets. Sleeping on the floor doesn't bother me - I just don't want my happy little boy scared and crying on his own in a strange cot!

I coslept recently at the parents - I took the mattress out of the carrycot/basket thing she used to go in - she slept on that on the floor and I slept next to her in a sleeping back with quilts under me. Not terribly comfortable for me but she was fine and again didn't bat an eye as we were lying tog as usual. X
