Why am I awake?

For the last week (at least) DS (14 months) has started to wake at around 2:30am crying, shouting (very loudly) and rolling back and forth every couple of minutes, this can last for ten minutes or an hour.
I BF and we co sleep.
He used to just wake, feed quickly then we would both go back to sleep, now I'm being woken to shouting it wakes me in panic mode, then all the tossing and turning wakes me fully so I can't get back off.
It takes at least 2 hours to go back by which time DS has started crying again, then it starts all over.
From 2:30 he's awake around every 90 minutes then wakes at 8am.
It's starting to upset me now.
Why can't I sleep when he sleeps? Regardless of how f**d I feel.
Why is he doing this?
His sleep is getting progressively worse as he gets older.
Also being like he is, cc will not work, I don't want to try it.
Any advice? Sorry to rant on, I feel like I'm dying (and look it too). :(

Should add that he is doing this in his sleep. He has never actually woken properly for feeds.

Could it be gas or a reaction to a new food?
