A diary of using Controlled Crying...

After some recent sleep problems we have had to resort to controlled crying with our 20mo DD. Having always been anti CC when she was little and favouring co-sleepin it is a difficult but, I feel, a necessary thing now. THought I'd keep a kind of diary or record of how it goes so others wanting to try it can see how it works (or not) for us. If nothing else I coan always print it out to show DD when she is a teenager

This first post may be rather long (sorry).

Background

DD was born in April 2002, 2 weeks late. Even in hospital she slept with me in bed and didn't like being in the hospital crib. When we got her home she had an instant dislike to the rocking crib and she spent the first 2 weeks sleeping in my bed. At 2 weeks she got a bedside cot and things were much btter from her point of view. At 6 weeks she started sleeping through in her cot from midnight to 6am, increasing this time till she was 16 weeks. We then broke her routine by going on holiday and from then on spent part of everynight sharing with me and DH. She would always settle herself to sleep on going to bed originally though but struggled when she woke later. At 15 months we moved house and DD had her own room for the first time. After a shaky couple of days she was able to go to sleep on her own again, but still came in with us during the early hours, after waking herself up hitting the cot bars.. At 18 months she went into a toddler bed. Again - same routine prevailed.

Recent Problems

This Christmas holidays she has had lots of breaks in any form of routine and then got a very heavy cold. Her cough was waking her up every hour or so and he really struggled for a few days. AS a result DH and I brought her in with us pretty much all of the night so we could at least get some rest and not be in and out of bed al night. Trouble is once she improved and we tried to put her back in her own bed problems have begun big style. She will not settles at night at all - getting out of bed, coming to the gate and crying and screaming. THis is happening whenever she wakes as well which can be 3 or 4 times a night.

remind me what i do in the night if he wakes.....

Hulababy · 05/01/2004 20:01

Exactly the same as now I am afraid. I kind of did:

When she woke and called out/cried - I went in and reassured her; cuddle; soothing words; pick up and put back in bed if necessary; then leave
5 minutes, 10 mnute...etc. Just the same

I found the night time bit the hardest to be honest but only had to do it 2 nights. The first night she took the longest but still only about 15 minutes. I think she woke twice. Got less each time and no she doesn't wake at all, touch wood!

Good luck.

i didnt get to 5 minutes...did about 1 minute then 2 minutes...then 3 minutes...then that was it.....
ish

Hulababy · 05/01/2004 20:04

THat is just fine Popsycal. You still do the increasing minutes and leaving him longer and longer. That is all that is needed. Sounds like he did well if you didn't have to leavehim long at all.

Erm, I don't actually see the difference between cc and leaving baby to cry...

...but I am going to bite my tongue and leave you to it...

prufrock · 05/01/2004 22:41

Only my definition sg, but cc would be leaving an obviously upset baby, who doesn't actually want to go to sleep (well not without Mummy or Daddy) so that you teach them that they can't always get what they want. Horrible to do, but sometimes necessary.
Leaving a baby to cry is just something some babies have to go through. (I shouldn't really be pontificating on this having just spent an hour lying on my bed cuddling dd to get her off to sleep) But she does have to cry before she drops off. Whether I'm there or not, no matter how tired she is, she always always has a little thrash and scream. Then she tips her head back and 30 seconds later she is out like a light. I think it's like me having to toss and turn in bed and turn my pillow over and plump it up before I can fall asleep. It's not distressing to her at all, it's just part of her routine. And mothers of babies who do need that bit of crying time do know the diffeence between an "I'm settling myself down" cry and a "I'm upset" cry. You've obviously never had a child who has that particular habit - I really would love for you to watch my dd in action one night soyou could see that it really really isn't cruelty.

Has anyone tried the Baby Whisperer's sleep training method (pick-up, put-down)? It doesn't involve leaving your baby to cry and worked really well when my ds was 4 months old. He always had to be rocked to sleep and during the day would wake up whenever you put him down. His "training" took only one night. I'm not saying you should never leave a baby to cry - my ds(now 8 months) has recently become mobile and is into his toys. He has become very "nap resistant", obviously preferring to be up and about and after trying various things, I just left him to cry it out. Horrible! It took a few days of leaving him to cry for around 45 minutes for him to realise that when it's nap time, I mean business! Now, he may move around a bit and moan when I put him down and leave the room, but he's generally asleep within 10 minutes.

popsycal · 06/01/2004 08:57

Hulababy · 06/01/2004 09:02

Oh fantastic news Popsycal. Glad to hear you managed a good night. Did you wake in the morning ina panic though, wondering why he wasn't awake? I did that each time, and still do a bit

Ours was night 8. She went to bed at 7pm shattered, not a sound although I am not sure she went to sleep straight away. She did stir at 11pm and asked for some water. Dh got her a little bit, she drank, laid down, said night night daddy, turn over and went straight back to sleep. She wasn't very impressed when I woke her at half past 6 this morning though

traceyshep · 07/01/2004 11:56

Dmum, we have been doing something like the baby whisperer method for a few nights. I guess it would be a cross between that and cc! We leave her for 5-10 mins to see if she settles, if she gets in too much of a paddy me or dh goes in, picks her up, when she is calm put her back again. Last night it didn't take too long, but previous nights have been 45-50 mins!

Brilliant Popsycal!

Have to say I was always so so against CC but I have been amazed at how well it worked for me. I think at 20 months she was ready for it. Now I have to get her up every morning, and she isn't impressed when it's 6:30am!!! I bet she will want a lie in on Friday - hope s anyway
