How to stop cuddling to sleep?

My ds is 8.5mo and all together a pretty good sleeper. He falls asleep on my lap listening to music and my overly-exaggerated heavy breathing. This works well for bedtime and naps and I was planning on doing it for as long as possible.

BUT we've recently discovered we have dc#2 on the way so this method is not going to work for much longer - once I have a bump he won't be able to sit comfortably, nor will I be able to transfer him to the cot easily once he's asleep. So over the next couple of months I need to get him falling asleep in his cot.

Anyone have any experience with this? What's the best method?

Forgot to add he's very active - as soon as he lies down (when he's awake) he rolls over, sits up, crawls around and pulls himself up to standing on the cot bars!
