Sleep problems with almost 14 month old

DD2 is almost 14 months old and we've been having problems getting her into a routine for months. DD2's sleep pattern (or lack of!) has been extremely different to DD1. People have joked to say it's our punishment for DD1 sleeping 12 hours a night with a total of 3 hours worth of naps in the daytime from the word go.

The majority of this is very likely our own fault. When DD2 was having problems sleeping at around 7 months, the only place she would settle would be her car seat. DH thought this was a great idea to just put her in there and let her sleep there when she wouldn't settle back down. It wasn't every night but although I tried to settle her back down in her cot on 'my night' (we do a one night on, one night off system), sometimes I would give in and let her sleep in her carseat where she would settle straight away.

We've not done the whole car seat thing for a while but she is still sleeping horrendously and we're desperate for some help on how to get her back to sleeping through the night again. As it is, she will currently go to sleep around 7pm, sleep for a few hours and be wide awake again for hours, finally settling down to sleep again. She doesn't really have much of a nap during the day.

I am pregnant with DC3, about to start my final year at University and DD1 is starting primary school in a few weeks.

If anyone has any sample routines, tips that worked or advice then I would be so so grateful. I really can't do another night like last night for much longer.

Thank you in advance :)

Just realised I forgot to put a title to my thread Blush Blush. Have reported to mumsnet in the hope they will take mercy on my sleep deprived baby brain and change it for me Grin

Thank you very much Helen :)

Just a tiny update: Got DD2 asleep in her for without too much bother at 7pm. She slept until 9.20pm ish and then woke up wide awake again. She won't lie down and just screams and cries. She's half woken DD1, who was fast asleep :(

I don't know what I can do with her, started going in every 2 minutes but she wouldn't calm down. Have taken her out her for and now trying to settle her in our room, but it's not working :(
