10mth old, not sleeping in cot

Hiya, wondering if anyone else is having this problem. Our 10mth old, girl was a great sleeper until she cut teeth at 5mths and since then has been up several times a night. We do have the occasional 2 weeks of 10hrs sleep, quick drink of water and back down for about 2/2.5hrs(napping at least 1.5hrs once a day and another 40mins) but then back to her current sleep pattern of, bath-story-bottle(BF to 9mths) cuddle and put in cot sleepy around 7/730. Awakes crying about 1030/11, cuddle wee drink of water - sleep, awakes 130 crying and wont go back down in cot. Falls asleep in arms as soon as we go to put her in cot, wakes screaming. I have ended up in the spare bed with her after couple of hrs up and down with her. We have tried to put her down awake, but she just crys and stands in her cot. Longest we have left her is 40mins, by this time she is very upset and sobbing. (she has become very clingy and just wants to be held) I dont like the cry it out and it hasnt worked for us right from an early age.
I have heard of the sleep regression at 8-9-10mths but this has been going on for about 3 weeks now, has anyone got any tips or anything they have done that has helped them get through this??
