Moving from 3 to 2 naps

Can anyone talk me through this process?

My DD is 7 1/2 months old and naps well in the day. I feel she's getting close to needing to drop her 3rd nap as I think it's starting to sometimes affect her ability to get to sleep at night, even though she appears tired when I put her to bed.

I'm a bit worried about her getting overtired if I try to extend her awake periods too much. Could I just wake her so she has a short 3rd nap if she's woken from her 2nd nap quite early in the day?

Thanks.

Of course you can. A sleep cycle is around 45 mins so no harm in waking her if she is sleeping for longer. She might be a bit grumpy mind and you might have to do some serious distraction till she gets used to it!
