Nap for two year old

Should a 2 year old have a nap?

It would be nice if my 2.3 year old DS had a nap, but it happens very rarely.

I think it depends on how tired they are and how they sleep at night.

Mine does, but all my friends have stopped theirs. To be honest, dd needs her sleep. She doesn't have one every day, but if we are home i pop her to bed for an hour just to recharge her batteries. I think it is very much down to the individual - plus i get a little break too!

depends if they need it!
i used to care for a little boy of 4 who still had a nap!

I think it depends a lot as this age.

DS has just started nursery in the mornings, and is also a bit under the weather. This afternoon he is still asleep after nearly 3 hours

Normally he has about 1 1/2 hours, but if he's not had a particularly active day, he may not have one at all. He will either chat away in his cot & play with toys (in the dark!) or, if we are out and about, he might have a nap in the car for half an hour or so.

He sleeps 12 hours at night.

I think he probably needs more sleep than average.

My 2.1 dd still has a nap and is a monster without it. Mostly she sleeps 1hr 15mins between 12.20-2pm, sometimes less and occasionally longer. I did try letting her miss it a couple of times and she was so whiney and grizzly.
She sleeps 11-12 hours at night. My friends little boy stopped naps at 21 months and was fine without.

DS (2.3) has 1-2hrs in the afternoon and sleeps well at night. All different.

From what I've heard most kids drop a day nap by the time they are 3 years old (though some keep on after this). That means that some children still need a day nap at 2 and some don't. Only you can know your child.

Personally - I am going to encourage quiet time in their room with a book etc. even if they don't sleep until 5 years old (when they start school) - ah I can dream !!
