Night time Seperation Anxiety

I think my ds is suffering from night time separation anxiety. He is almost 1, and for the past 2 weeks he has been learning to self settle, all is going great with this and he now falls asleep within 3-15 mins, there are tears when we leave the room but these turn to moan/grizzle and then eventually sleep.
However, during the night he is waking up around 3 times. I always go into him (after waiting around 10 mins to see if he will self settle) to check that he is ok, and pick him up and cuddle him whilst reassuring him that everything is ok. But i'm confused about what the best thing to do is. At the moment once, he is settled and sleepy (can take upto 30 mins though) in my arms i will then put him back down, and he does cry and usually it's for about 15 mins before falling asleep, but then a few hours later same thing again the same thing happens.
Do any mn's have any words of wisdom for how to deal with this and how long does this usually last?
