What is your 2yo's sleep routine?

Just curious because the sleep needs of DD1 (just turned 2) seem to be changing and I'm experimenting to see what's works best for her (and us ).

Tell me about your 2yo:

  1. Exact age
  2. NAP: start & finish times (and do you ever wake her?)
  3. NIGHT-TIME SLEEP: ditto

Thanks

Was 2 on Dec 11.

Just dropped day time sleep as nightmare at night (unless ill, falls asleep in car on way back from somewhere then I wake when we get home and has 45 min at nursery when he does a full day on a thursday)

Night time asleep by 7pm and wakes between 7-8pm (very rarely wakes in night unless ill or nightmare but easy to get back off again)

My ds was 2 in september, he hasnt had naps for at least 6 months although he does occasionally fall asleep if he is in his pushchair but as he walks everywhere now that is very rare. He hates sleeping and until recently it has been a battle to get him to bed but for the past 3wks he has been asleep by 8pm, on the rare occassion it has been 6.30pm. He wakes up every morning at 6.30am without fail even if he has had a late night.

I think all children vary as to how much sleep they need. My dh never slept as a child, his mum used to be awake every night with him until 3am then he would be up again at 7 and only ever slept for 10mins during the day, ds takes after him but thankfully he isnt as bad.

2 in May but has been in this pattern since 2:

Naps for between 1-2 hours in the day. Mostly from 11.15ish but does vary depending on what we're doing. I only wake her on days she's going to pre-school, otherwise leave her for as long as she wants. Deffo still needs the nap and it suits her best in the morning. If she has it in the afternoon she's grumpy for the rest of the day.

At night goes 7pm till 7.30/8.00 am. Never any problems with waking.

gladbag · 04/02/2006 18:35

Ds was 2 yesterday

Still naps every day, although the time is later now, and he doesn't sleep for as long - generally 1.00pm til 2.30pm, although he sometimes wakes after an hour, and very occasionally sleeps for longer. I always wake him by 3pm.

He goes down between 7 - 7.30am , and is usually awake between 6.30am and 7.30am. HTH

bagshaw · 04/02/2006 18:46

DS was 2 last week he still naps 11am - 12-12.30, bed at 7pm but usually up anywhere between 5 - 6am, we've tried everything to try and knock this on but alas no. I dred the time when he won't nap during the day! Oh and I'll only wake him if he goes over the 2hr nap mark - he never wakes well and we usually have a 2hr cry, whinging session which is nice!

FrayedKnot · 04/02/2006 18:53

DS will be 2 in March.

Bed at 7-7.15
Wakes between 7 - 8am (very occasioanlly I have to wake him).

Naps from 1.30 until 3pm at the latest. I usually have to wake him, but there are odd days when he doesn;t go to sleep (plays in cot for a while quite happily) and sometimes if we're out and about he only sleeps in the car or doesn;t sleep at all.

He can manage 2-3 days with no nap but then gets terribly grumpy while he catches up.

Has been like this for about 8 months. Rarely wakes at night unless ill, & usually settles easily.

geogteach · 04/02/2006 19:20

DD was 2 in June sleeps 7 - 7 but hasn't napped since before she was 2

MerlinsBeard · 04/02/2006 19:25

ds1 is nearly 3 but his sleep pattern hasn't altered since he was about 18 months!

He has a nap in afternoon from 1ish till 3 ish, altho if he misses that he will sleep from 3ish til i wake him at 5! (try to avoid this!!)

He goes to bed at 7 and (at 2) was up at 7ish. now he is older he plays a bit b4 sleep so it refelcts in the time he naturally wakes up

Nemo1977 · 04/02/2006 19:27

ds is 2.3yrs
night sleep tends to be 8.30pm as dh only comes home from work at 8.15pm so wouldnt see ds if he went earlier. However if he has not had a sleep in day[like today] he will go to bed around 8 but tonight he has taken himself at 7pm.He wakes up between 6.30 and 7am most days.
he mostly naps in day from 3-4.30pm but that tends to be if we have had a busy morning. IF he doesnt sleep it shows.I also find with Ds if he doesnt nap that day he will wake once in the night so instead of sleeping longer he sleeps less.

CelluliteQueen · 04/02/2006 19:27

DS was two and a half yesterday. Goes to bed at 8pm and generally wakes between 8am and 9am (has been known to wake up at 11am when having a growth spurt!).

Definitely still needs his afternoon nap and can't get through the day without it. Will usually have about 2 hours, sometimes more, sometimes less but we never wake him and he always goes to bed on time if he has more sleep than usual in the afternoon. I am a SAHM so he can have as much sleep as he needs.

Latz · 04/02/2006 19:42

dd was 2 in October - gave up nap over Christmas, sleeps from 7.30ish to 7 or later - just depends.

nulnulcat · 04/02/2006 19:50

dd 2 on xmas eve gave up daytime nap in oct well kind of forced to give it up as it was getting later and later in day and she wasnt going to bed til gone 10pm!! now is in bed 645 to 7 wakes up quite a bit during night has never slept through night completley though is easy to settle though usually back asleep in couple of minutes wakes up to get up between 8 and 830am

bobbybobbobbingalong · 04/02/2006 19:52

When he was 2

Start sleep at 7pm. Wake up at 7am.

That was it.

Tommy · 04/02/2006 19:54

DS2 was 2 in August.
He sometimes falls asleep on the way to DS1's nursery at 9am, sometimes on the way back, sometimes in the car if we go anywhere in the morning, sometimes on the way to pick up DS1, sometimes on the way back, sometimes falls aslep on living room floor or sofa and sometimes he doesn't do any of these!
Normally asleep by 7pm (especially if hasn't had nap during the day)but often wakes in the night, taking about an hour to get back to sleep and get a rude awakening by his older brother around 6-6.30
So - no routine at all

Frizbetheexpansionset · 04/02/2006 19:57

DD 2.3

Nap none existant, unless she falls asleep in the car by accident

Nightsleep, bed at 7pm, asleep 7-7.30-8 depending on how she feels, sometimes wakes up/stirs about 11pm or 2am often wanting a drink, but has been poorly for past week, so currently going with this...then sleeps until 7am ish.

Mercy · 04/02/2006 20:00
  1. ds will be 2 this month
  1. sleeps 1 pm to 3 pm on average . Sometimes I have to wake him as I have to get dd from school

  2. 7.30 is average bedtime; he wakes up anywhere between 6 and 7 am. But always 6 am when it's my turn for a lie in!

dd stopped daytime sleeping at 20 months, so I consider myself lucky!

BabyDL · 06/02/2006 12:10

please help my d as no sleep routine she sleeps 9-11 for 30 min sometimes a little more then a hour before 3 and then we try getting be to bed about 8ish what time do you think is OK for 1 year old to go to bed? it used to be 9 when i was working but i have taken another 6 months off as i can cope

franch · 06/02/2006 16:37

I sympathise babydl but maybe start a new thread on this? Sleep routines at 1 and 2 are very different. I'm not really clear what your problem is as it looks like your DD does have a routine - ?? Bedtime has always been 7pm for us (altho we're very flexible on this these days), but 8pm is pretty common too

good luck

DD 2 & 9 months

Nap - varies... if I take her for a drive, then she will sleep from about 1pm - 2/2.30pm. If not, she will either forgo the nap, or will drop off about 3pm for an hour. I never wake her unless we have to go out (pregnant and sleeping at the same time as her ).

Night time - if no nap... bed at 7.30, plays til about 8.30 at the latest, often no playing, and wakes again at about 7am-7.30.

WITH nap - Bed at 7.30, will play until about 9pm if I don't go up and tell her to stop beforehand. Again, wakes about the same time.

I don't want her downstairs after about 7.30pm because I need grown up time, but I appreciate that she often just isn't tired when she has had a nap (especially a late one), so I don't mind her playing quietly until she is more tired.

Gem13 · 06/02/2006 17:05

2 next week

around 12ish - 1 hour in the car or buggy or 1.5/2 hours in cot - never wake her unless I have to. I only wake her if we have been out and she has fallen asleep in the car, had an hour and it's nearly 4.

7/7.30 pm asleep - 7.30 awake

Hayls · 06/02/2006 17:11

2 last week

sleeps for anyhting between 1 and 2 hours about lunchtime (sometimes at 12, sometimes 2) Only wake her if essential. She is about to drop this ( I think) and hasn't napped today so is a sleepy mess atm but bad mummy won't let her nap

sleeps 7-7/ 730. Only wake her if essential but she normally wakes us. Very rarely wakes in night and doesn't 'need' us then unless really poorly. Please don't let that have tempted fate though
