lunchtime nap problem

laracroft2001 · 26/03/2012 12:36

Hi
Im sure this has been done a million time before, but having very luckily not having many sleep problems this has just cropped up.

DS is 16 weeks old and all of a sudden has started waking up during his lunchtime nap. for 16 weeks we have NEVER had a problem during his lunch time nap and i really cant lose my 2 hours!

his routine is
7am up
9-945 nap
12-2 nap (normally)
1/2 hour nap between 4&5
bed 630/7
dream feed 10-1030

I know lunchtime naps go wrong because of too long a morning nap so today i cut his nap to 1/2 hour but no difference

I am convinced its not hunger.
he is not crying just sort of shouting and I can tell he is tired..

ANY ideas/suggestions??

4 month sleep regression. I remember ds doing the same even in the sling where he'd sleep for hours. All of a sudden he was having none of it and would resist sleep. I'm afraid to say it was the beginning of his 45 min naps which was common amongst his age group so I didn't take it personally.

Sleep does change at 4 months and the deeper sleep that you've been used to is replaced by more adult sleep cycles. It's very very common as Iggly says for the lunchtime nap to reduce to 45 minutes (one full sleep cycle) at this time - and it can be a bugger to sort out.

When he wakes I would top him up and try and get him back to sleep that way just in case he's a little bit hungry. When would he normally feed prior to his lunchtime nap?

laracroft2001 · 27/03/2012 18:25

Thanks for your replies! He would normally feed around 11am, approx 6-8oz.
Today he went down at just before 12, woke at 120. Put dummy straight in (normally only use in middle of night if we get a rare waking) and he went back down and got him up at two. Want to try establish the nap time back !!!!

HV today also said he was teething!!

Hi, I'm having exactly the same trouble, if a little more exaggerated. DD is a couple of weeks older, also teething, and not napping! We used to have the same routine as you and people would comment on how lucky I was to have the 2 hr nap.

Someone suggested to me going out in the buggy for nap time till she's back in the pattern. Might try tomorrow. I fed baby back to sleep for her lunch time nap today, but still woke 1/2 hr early. The only 'good' nap she has is the afternoon because she is soooo exhausted, and that's the one she is meant to drop I believe!

Let me know how you get on!

showtunesgirl · 27/03/2012 20:40

Ditto here with 18 w/o DD!

RosesAndCustard · 27/03/2012 20:41

Hah, just posted on your thread too!! Hello!

laracroft2001 · 27/03/2012 21:04

So it's common then!! I keep repeating 'it's just a phase it's just a phase'

He normally has his lunch nap in his pram as I am usually at the gym then (very quiet gym and they let me bring him in :) can not lose my 2 hours!!!!

Am trying to stick to the two hours so even if he is waking up early, I am not getting him up until 'up time' to hopefully reestablish the nap. Obv If he is screaming then that's different

Might try give him a top up 1oz feed just before nap to totally rule out hunger, though I am convinced it's not hunger as he has a feed around 1045/11

Good idea to top up before feed - might help to relax them even if not hungry. Where DD is missing naps she has been dropping off after feeds because it makes her so chilled out!

RosesAndCustard · 27/03/2012 21:23

...has played havoc with routine though!

laracroft2001 · 27/03/2012 21:26

I feel your pain!! Fingers crossed tomorrow goes better ...

update...

so far so good today!! he went down at about 1150 and is still asleep..
I gave him an extra 30ml at 1140 ish, and though he icked a bit of it up, he took it so maybe that has taken the edge off?!
Also made sure his pram was covered so he wasnt woken up by light or such like.
I am in no way stupid enough to think thats problem solved but at least thats a bit of light at the end of the tunnel!

That's good news. How long did the nap last after that? We've had a bit of a better day too - awful night though. Been taking DD on walks over nap time. Managed 1 1/2 hrs at lunch (walked past smug neighbour with idyllic child while mine was howling - couldn't stop to chat!!).

DD v happy now so can't be all bad. Woken every 1hr to 2 hrs last night though - ouch.

laracroft2001 · 28/03/2012 16:02

I woke him up at two... See how 2moro goes!!
We were ok last nite, he stirred around 5 but I moved his teddies next to him and he dropped back off til 7.

But I definitely know what being up every hour feels like!! No doubt cos naps were good today tonight will be dreadful!!

And lol @ your smug neighbour... There's nothing worse!!

Well, maybe if tomorrow goes well for you it was a food issue. Let me know how it goes tomorrow, I fed to sleep at the afternoon nap. Don't want her to have dependency on feeding to sleep, but I also think I can't have everything!!

Hope you have a good night!

laracroft2001 · 29/03/2012 14:33

Hey. Was ok today as well so maybe was a feed problem!
He was awake at 3 last night and it took me half hour to settle him which a lot longer than usual. Though perhaps my fault as he had his injections yesterday afternoon and I didn't give him calpol before bed. How was your night?

Hi, last night was awful again (every hour!) so I took action today! She had her first baby rice at 11 and for the first time in weeks she showed signs of tiredness at 12 and then slept for 2 1/2 hrs! I feel like I've got my baby back. She was having so much fun in her bouncer this afternoon after her nap.

Fingers crossed that's problem solved for both of us for now!

laracroft2001 · 29/03/2012 20:54

Ah I feel for you last night but amazing news r.e the baby rice working!!
We must have been starving the poor souls lol! I bet that will make a huge difference for you 2nite as well!! Smile Grin
