16mo takes hours to settle

DS is generally very good at settling himself to sleep during the day and when we put him to bed. The problem is if he wakes up in the night he will not settle on his own and it will take at least 2 hours before he goes off again. If we even think about putting him back in his cot awake he goes into hysterics but he rarely settles in our bed either.
Until now I haven't really been too concerned because he only wakes up once every couple of weeks or so. Thing is I'm very pregnant and am finding I have next to no patience with him anymore. DH does his fair share and I've explained to him that once the new baby arrives he's going to have to be 'on call' with DS because I can't physically be up with bubs and potentially him for hours at a time. So in a very convoluted way I'm asking if anyone has any ideas or tips to get him to fall asleep quicker?

(((hugs))) I bet you must be shattered!

Whats his daytime routine like at the moment? Wake up time, nap time/length & bedtime?

How is he when he wakes at night - happy/wanting to play or crying?

Does he wake at a similar time each night & when?

Is he teething?

Might help me give you a few suggestions.x
