Crying whilst still asleep

Hi has anyone experienced babies that cry whilst still asleep and if so do you know why it happens and if there is anything I can do to stop it? My 10 MO DS has stopped taking night time feeds but he cries out frequently in his sleep and sometimes for prolonged periods. Its a proper distressed cry, but its hard to comfort him as I'm not sure he knows I'm there and I don't want to pick him up. Pretty heart breaking and also, lets face it, I'm shattered!

He goes to sleep easily at night and then the fun doesn't tend to start until around 11 / midnight. Then it can sometimes go on until about 6:30 am.
He's got a runny nose at the moment (I use a vapour plug at night and sometimes prop the head of his cot up if he really needs it) but other than that seems fine during the day and naps well. I can put him down awake and he puts himself to sleep, although he's not always happy about it Wink

Any ideas?
