10 month old seems to be dropping second nap?

In the last few weeks DS's morning nap has been getting later and later and is currently at about eleven ( he wakes up in the morning at about 7.00). He generally wakes fromhis nap at about 12.45 so isn't ready for his afternoon nap until about 4.30 which is then too close to bedtime (he wakes up at about 6.00) I've tried bringing his bedtime forward to 6.30 and he seems to mange ok on one nap but he seems a bit young to only have one nap. Would I be better to let him have his second nap and push bedtime back? Any experience/ ideas appreciated!

Were very hit and miss on naps, but my 9 month old sometimes only has one nap a day.
It usually is a longer one than his 40-60 min normal ones, but one hour long nap isn't unheard of round here (we sleep when tired, not a fixed times)

Do you just wait til he's yawning etc before giving him a nap or do you try earlier and fail? DD is 11mo and a few weeks ago I thought she was dropping a nap - it was becoming a nightmare to settle her for pm nap. I tried to move her to one and she survived fine til midday for three days in a row but then clearly started getting OT. We went back to two naps, the morning one became quite short and I made no effort to lengthen it and the afternoon one became easier again. Thing was she hasn't seemed hugely tired for morning nap for weeks and weeks but she will still take the nap. I feel she's still better on two than trying to make it through to bedtime on one nap.

Now the morning one is getting >1hr again and th afternoon one is getting difficult again, need to wake her early from morning nap now!

Not sure that helps but just to say you're not alone trying to work out what's going on with LO's naps!

Thanks for the feedback. I only put him down for a nap if he seems tired- he is pretty hard to settle at the best of times so I don't bother trying unless I know its going to work! He is just so erratic with his sleep I don't know what to do for the best but thanks for your experiences - any others care to share?

My son did at this age.. On and off... And by 12 months he was completely down to one. Think it's fine if your baby can cope. Mine never needed much sleep sadly.

If he is coping ok on the one nap then I'd say staying with it & doing early bedtimes is most definitely the best idea. However, if his nap is much less than 2hrs I would possibly even do a 6pm BT. Like PP says, my LO also started doing some 1 nap days at 11/12 months old, but after a few days got overtired, so we reverted back to 2 naps. And for quite a few months we alternated between the 2, doing 1 nap if he could handle it or 2 if he was overtired. We completely dropped his morning nap at 15 months old.

Your other option at this stage, since he will still take both naps, would be to cut one of them shorter. Since his morning nap is already at 11am, I'd probably let him sleep at this one & then put him down for his PM nap at the usual 4.30pm but wake him after 30 mins or so & then do bedtime at the usual time.
