baby sleeping on side

dd2 is 9 days old, I put her down on her back she fusses and whines until she manages to rock herself over onto her left side and then she falls asleep instantly! (she was 10lb 9oz born so a nice round ball to aid the rocking!)

I know sleeping on her front is bad, but is sleeping on her side bad? Should I stop her?

When she was born 3 midwifes saw her on her side and didn't say anything. She was also awake and fussing until midnight last night, then woke at 2am for a feed and at 4 am I gave in and put her on her side as I needed to sleep and I could hear dd1 stiring)

So hit me with it, how bad a parent am I? Am I going straight to hell?

It's perfectly fine. Well at least in Finland and Poland for sure. They recommend all babies sleep on their side so that they don't choke if they were to get sick. I sometimes get worried when dd2 rolls onto her back as I've gotten so used to seeing babies sleeping on their sides.

Congrats on your new baby!

Your not a bad parent at all. All mothers ask themselves that question. I certainly did. Its fine to sleep on her side, just keep an eye out. but mostly they roll back onto their back, takes a few months to learn to roll onto her front.

Congrats.

My DD is now 5 months and sleeps a lot longer and better on her side. When she wakes in the night for a feed she always goes back quickly if I put her on her side but takes forever if she is on her back. As long as they are on a proper matteress with no pillows even if she did role onto her front she should still be fine and not get smothered.
