my ds (6 months today!) will not sleep for more than 30 mins at a time during the day. i know this is a common problem. will he grow out of it or do i need to do something to help him sleep for longer? I always try and put him down in his cot but he will sleep longer if in his pram or on me. he won't feed properly if he's tired (which is all the time because of the short naps) but he won't sleep for long if he's hungry!

What sort of routine have you got him on?
My DS is 7mo today and this is our day...
7am - Milk
8-8.30 - Breakfast
9 - Nap (1.5hrs)
10.30-11 - Milk
12.30-1 - Lunch
1-1.30 - Nap (1.5hrs)
3pmish - Milk
5.30 - Dinner
7.15 - Milk and bed

Ds wasnt a good sleeper either but I tried the controlled crying to get him to nap for longer.

Our routine is almost identical- except for the length of the naps! I usually try and get him to have an extra one in the afternoon so he lasts til bedtime. Don't really want to try CC just yet though not ruling it out.

DS went through a phase of 3X 30-45 mins naps at this age. When he was able to sit up properly he moved onto longer naps.

My DD is now 9 months she always had 2x 30 mins during the day until she was crawling then they changed to 40 mins (WOW!) she now sleeps a lot better (hmm) in her cot but before always prefered her pram. I have never done anything about it just let her get on with it, it seems to suit her.

I'm not convinced there's an answer. I think you have to sit it out.

My daughter is six months and she also sleeps in 30-45 minute bursts. We were getting two one hour sleeps until she started at the childminder. I don't think CC would help - she wakes up bright as a button, but she's soon tired again.

It's a pain in the arse and makes your day very long and very demanding. Huge sympathies from another mum suffering a wakeful baby.

My 28 months daughter does not want to go to sleep in the afternoon because she does not want to stay alone. When she does , will only sleep for 20 min.waking up screaming & crying like mad & refusing to stay in bed any longer. If she does not go to bed at all :in the afternoon ,she gets to a point where she is exhausted and becomes very irritable &difficult to manage.Any suggestions?
