Basically, she's in a cot now, but DD2 will need cot soon as she's outgrowing the moses basket. But I just can't imagine DD1 getting into bed and staying there! Do they adjust easily? And what are the rules on door locks/catches so they can't wander round upstairs?

It depends on the child as to how easily they adjust. Mine were OK, they'd had their big bed (I wen straight to full single) for a good while before moving them in. They played in it, then progressed to naps before the first night.
For the oldest he had the reassurance of being able to go back to he cot if he wanted, but never did.

As they sleep on a different floor, we used a stair gate on their door to prevent wandering without shutting them in, but it had to go once we were getting them dry at night as they needed to get to the bathroom quicker than we could get to them.

We moved DD when she was 23 months and it was absolutely fine. We took her shopping and she chose her duvet and pillow covers. When we came home she 'helped' us convert her cot into a bed and helped put the sheets etc on. She was very excited! We just did exactly same bedtime routine, except last story with her lying in bed. First week she had pillow on floor because she wasn't used to sleeping on one and didn't want it.

First night she woke up about 1030 and then was upset because it was strange. It took about 1.5 hours together her back in bed and asleep. 2ndnight she slept through. 3rdnight she fell out, we heard her, went p and she was fast asleep on floor, I picked herup and she woke up cue 20 minutes of trauma. 3rdnight granny was baby sitting and she in and out of her bed constantly between 730and 11. Since then she has pretty much slept through as normal for the last 3 months and loves it.
