This may sound stupid to some people but I am a born worrier!! My 16 month old seems to sleep too much, he is sleeping 3 sometimes 4 hours through the day (all in one go!) then goes to bed at 7.30-8pm and doesn't wake until 8-8.30am!! I knwo this may sound like a dream to some but I am worried he has some kind of sleeping disease... can anyone reassure me!!

It wouldn't worry me, does he seem fine in every way? If so I'd just enjoy it, some babies sleep more than others.

SorenLorensen · 18/01/2006 10:53

You lucky, lucky woman! It would only be a problem if his big sleep in the day was stopping him sleeping at night - and it isn't - I am green with envy, neither of mine have ever slept that well

PiccadillyCircus · 18/01/2006 10:53

When DS was that age he slept that much sometimes.

He is fine .

Auntymandy · 18/01/2006 10:55

my 1st born slept hors. 12 a night plus a morning and afternoon sleep of up to 3 hours each. One friend actually went tupstairs to see him as she thought I had got rid of him!!!
I dont think they can over sleep!!

madmarchhare · 18/01/2006 10:56

Absolutely fine. DS, 2.1, still has a couple of hours in the day and happy to do a good 12 hours at night.

4blue1pink · 18/01/2006 11:01

I understand you completely I have had 4 children and they have all had this. One and four particularly and i DID take them to the doctors.

They all just said they were fine although no 4 had to see specialist as his physical development was actually delayed.

My kids are all healthy and very bright ( almost PARTICULARLY) the sleepier ones. They still sleep a reasonable amount (even 13 year old)
Dont worry ...do try to enjoy...other people used to say to me 'its not right' now I just think I was lucky!

It's funny...I was just coming on to do a little research on the same topic. My 5.5 month old has been sleeping 12-12.5 hours per night. She can barely stay awake for an hour after that before she needs a nap of about an hour. And then lately, she needs another nap, well before noon. She rubs her eyes a good amount. Yesterday, in the afternoon, after much eye rubbing, I tried twice to get her to nap and she didn't want to. I didn't worry about it, given how much she slept. But by later afternoon, I took her out in the buggy to chill her out and she did eventually fall asleep.

I've been following the 2-hour rule and I worry I've created a "monster." She's a very happy, smiley baby and I feel I deserve it because for the first three-four months, she was very challenging. Didn't want to sleep during the day unless in her buggy and didn't want to go to sleep at night. I'm so grateful I've finally got the 7pm-7am thing.

Why do we worry so much?

Babies grow when they're asleep you know. Bet yours will be really growing fast right now

waterfalls · 18/01/2006 13:42

All three of mine slept 16 hours a day before they were 2 yrs - enjoy it while it lasts

bellomum · 18/01/2006 13:52

I do "enjoy" it I must say but sometimes I do feel a bit homebound. Maybe that's just January and this grey weather. I do know they grow and all sorts of good things happen when they sleep-it's a lovely thought really.

Thanks.

Piffle · 18/01/2006 14:11

my 3 yr old still naps 2-3 hrs in the day and 12-14 at night
Learn to love it

MrsBigD · 18/01/2006 14:37

oh I'm so jeasleous! I dream of 7pm/7am without interruptions. Hey I'd settle for only being disturbed once over night dd is 4y and comes in about 0200 and gets up at 7 and ds is 17m and wakes up at least twice or 3x a night
So enjoy it!

GREENY · 18/01/2006 15:53

I was about to post a thread onthe same subject! DS is 18 weeks and has a nap in the morning (about 30mins) then 12-2pm then one at around 3.30 for about 30 mins then goes to sleep at around 6pm through to about 6am. I too was worried that he may be sleeping too much and not 'developing' enough, but seems from the replies here that I should just count my blessings and that he's fine.

jenweber630 · 19/01/2006 00:15

Definitely he's fine - my ds is 13 months and does the same (though this just started when we switched him from sleeping in a cot to a futon on the floor). We should be so thankful!!

4blue1pink · 19/01/2006 09:45

Its true bellomum I felt it slightly marrs my parenting experience as baby IS ratty if the huge amougnt of sleep is not obtained and sleeps best at home.

Had a very tidy house but not great for Mummys social life!

Kittypickle · 19/01/2006 09:49

My DS was like this and I do remember feeling like I never got anywhere but the time to myself more than compensated. Make the most of it, now he is 2.4 he has just stopped his daytime sleep and it's a shock to my system.
