Keeping DS in his own bed

DS is three. When he was a baby, we never co-slept, he always slept in his cot, but in the last year or so he's started to come through to our room during the night and sleeping in between us. It's nice to cuddle him, but not brilliant for a good night's sleep ? it's not that big a bed so we're all cramped, he tend to kick out randomly, tries to sleep horizontally across us, stuff like that.

We really want to get him back into sleeping in his own bed all night, but my main worry is, explaining this to him without him thinking we're rejecting him. He just knows that he wants to cuddle up with us and doesn't seem to understand why we don't want him there but want him to go back to a now-cold bed in his room. Any suggestions?

I have exactly the same problem with my 4ys old. He just says he loves to stay with us. I understand that the only technique is repetitively bringing him back (not looking forward to that!) but should we encourage a reward approach (still does not work) or start taking away his favourite toys?
