How to stop swaddling

Looking for advice from those who have successfully moved swaddle addicts into gro-bags! We swaddled DS from birth until 8 weeks, when we moved him into a gro-bag with no problems. At 4 months he had an itchy rash as a result of a viral infection, and we swaddled him again as he was waking himself up rubbing his face. The rash has been gone for two weeks but DS can't seem to sleep in his gro-bag anymore. Last night he woke every hour or so until we gave in and swaddled him at 1am - he then slept through.
I guess many would say to leave him be if he likes to be swaddled - but I'm worried from a safety perspective (he can roll from front to back and is trying VERY hard to go the other way). We are also going to South Africa in seven weeks where he will stew if he's still in the swaddle! It's one of those 'miracle' ones that look like a straight jacket...
Do all babies grow out of swaddling eventually?!

I swaddled dd until she was around 11wks and then for her daytime naps I put her in her cot with a sheet tucked firmly under the mattress at one side and the bottom and then when she was down all I had to do was tuck in the other side but u also put that under the mattress so it was nice and tight over her. Hope this helps.

We swaddled from 1o weeks until about 17 weeks with DS. It was quite easy to wean him off it as he started getting an arm free anyway! So for a few nights we swaddled him with one arm out, then a few nights with both arms out, then a few nights with a sheet tucked in and then we moved to grobags or sheet/blanket. Sometimes he doesn't seem to sleep well in the grobag so we moved to blankets. Maybe he would prefer a tucked in sheet?

We swaddled DD until she was almost 6 months old and we were going in constantly to re-swaddle during the night as she had got an arm out and woken herself up. And she had started to roll over from her back to her front, and one night I watched her do it while swaddled up, so it was time.
We just went straight to gro-bag (and got rid of her dummy at the same time incidentally). It took about a week or two for her to get used to settling herself.
I plan to get DS into gro-bags as soon as he is big enough to fit into the 6 months + ones (currently 3.5 months and breaking an arm out of his swaddle every night).
I found that once DD could settle herself without swaddling she became an amazing sleeper - we had very broken nights before this.
