top tips for moving from moses to cot

As a first time mum I'm seeking the advise of you wise MM's! DD is only 8 weeks old & already beginning to out grow her Moses basket. I don't know if this is typical but I was expecting her to be in it for a lot longer. So soon I'm gonna have to get her used to the cot and feeling slightly anxious this will not go well as sleeping in the Moses is quite hit & miss (much prefers a warm body!) For a start I don't know whether to move the cot in our room or keep in nursery & get her used to her room, but she seems so little to be sleeping on her own. Anyway any advice on how to make this transfer as seamless as possible will be much appreciated!

The secret is to........ Just put her in the cot Grin. Only joking!

Personally I would move the cot into your room. Then just go for it.

At 8 weeks it's very normal to prefer sleeping on you, my ds still does and he's 14 weeks. But I've just had my second night where he has slept til 5;30, mow I just need him to go bed at a child's bedtime rather than mine!

We put the cot in our room and just put ds in it one night (about 10 wks). It seemed to be arelief for him as he slept with his arms outstretched as if going 'yeah...space'. Preferred warm body too but there was no issue stopping the moses basket. Good luck!

Btw we kept in our room til 6m.

And enjoy him sleeping on you it doesn't last forever.

My DD was out of her basket before she hit 6 weeks! She kept hitting the sides with her arms and startling herself. We just moved the cot into our room and one night just put her down in that rather than the basket! All went fine! She took to it straight away & I think she is much more comfortable! She sleeps like a starfish now with tons of room!

Try her in the cot, she may surprise you. I worried for ages about making the transition with my DD, but she didn't even seem to notice when we moved her into the cot at 10 weeks.

To help my DD get to sleep in her cot I roll up a blanket and put it in a horseshoe shape around the top of her - not quite touching her. I have found this has helped her sleep much better, particularly at nap time. It must make her feel a bit more snug and cosy (as it sort of mimics the moses basket shape) and it prevents her jolting herself awake as her arms fall (as they slightly land on the blanket). I do move it once she's asleep so that she doesn't pull it on to her face or whatever. You could put the shape under the sheet I guess and then you wouldn't have to worry about that. Just an idea to help the transition!

I made the transition from moses to cot and own room at the same time, but then dd was about 18 weeks (i think).

I would say just go for it and expect a couple of unsettled nights, I was pleasantly surprised that dd took to it so well, after 2 nights she was sleeping pretty well - you never know your lo may surprise you too! Good luck.

casperella · 21/12/2011 22:37

Neither of my 2 seemed to notice the transition, so hope you get the same! I remember worrying though - hope all goes well.

Thanks everyone for the advice & reassurance, we will give it a go v soon! Decided we will move cot into our room for now at least. Think we just have to suck it and see so to speak!

Just do it, both DDs slept much better, no transition needed.
