Nightmares!

Does anyone know what causes nightmares - really really bad nightmares! its not caused by food or anything thats been drunk they have been going on a while now and i cant pinpoint anything thats causing them!!

Thanks colditz, my poor mum is PLAGUED by horrific nightmares at the moment and she has been having them on and off for about 6 months and they are leaving her so low, she doesnt smoke and she doesnt take anit-depressants but she has been a little stressed lately, i havent seen her so low in a long time and she says its these horrendous dreams she has and she cant get rid off them!! i just want to try and help her if i can!
