Sleep and feeding

At the moment I set an alarm at night to wake me up to feed DD in case she doesn't wake and demand food within four hours of her last feed based on the HV advice I was given at her birth. When do you think it would be okay to stop setting an alarm and just trust DD to demand food when she wants it? I don't mind doing night feeds I just don't know when ensuring that they eat at least every four hours becomes unnecessary. DD probably wakes me before/around the alarm time about 50% of the time anyway.

How old is she?

Personally, I think for the first week this is fine. After that provided they are a decent size (eg over 7lbs), you can leave them to it. You both need your sleep!

she's only 5 weeks so I'm not so much asking for now as for future reference. She's 9lbs 3.5oz at the moment

Thanks for your responses!

Don't worry about setting the alarm then. If she feeds regularly during the day she will tell you if she's hungry at night (IME).

If she's gaining weight fine, then at five weeks, I wouldn't worry. (But no expert here either!)

Thanks that's helpful!
