Patting to sleep?

DD is 4 months and I currently hold her close to me until she falls asleep. I wait til she's properly asleep and then put her down. She will be going to nursery just before she's one and I'm assuming she will still be needed a nap at that point. I'm also assuming that nursery won't rock her to sleep?

How do I start gradually helping her to self settle? I've read that you need to go from rocking to patting to sleep but how do you do this? I tried it tonight and she just flailed her arms about until she knocks her dummy out and then cries, so I picked her up and gave up. Is there any particular technique involved? She did used to go down when she was still awake and be stroked to sleep, for about 2 weeks when she was nearly 3 months but suddenly stopped.

My nurserry would rock, pat children to sleep Smile

Anyway, she isn't going for a few months - a lot will happen to her sleep pattern and needs in that time

Aw, don't stress yet.

Just as an example, at four months my DD1 was a nightmare to get to sleep. Normally involving walking long distances with a pram. By 11 months, when I went back to work, you could read her a short story, give her a cuddle and leave the room.

Enjoy the cuddles if it's working for both of you at the moment I say.
