Is there such a thing as TOO MUCH sleep?

My DD is 6 months old and I am beginning to worry that she sleeps too much.

This is her average day:

06:30-07:30 Awake
07:30-10:30 Asleep
10:30-11:30 Awake
11:30-14:30 Asleep
14:30-15:30 Awake
15:30-18:00 Asleep
18:00-19:00 Awake

She sleeps every night from about 19:00 to 06:30 the next morning. So as you can see from this she is only awake for about 4 hours in total all day and then sleeps through the night. Is this normal by any stretch of the imagination?

I feel like I barely see her. I only put her for a nap when she starts to show signs of tiredness and she always goes to sleep almost immediately in her cot.

I know that to other sleep deprived parents this might sound like a stealth-boast about how much my baby sleeps but it really isn't! I am starting to worry that the excessive sleeping might be abnormal.

She has been in vaguely this routine since about 8 weeks old and I expected her to eventually have shorter naps and be able to stay awake for longer but it never happened. I am spending most of my maternity leave sitting around drinking tea, watching TV and waiting for her to wake up.

Has anyone else got any experience of a baby who sleeps this much?!

Is she alert when she is awake?

I think DS was similar to this as a newborn, but not by 6 months I don't think. Sorry I don't know if it's normal or not.

Yes, she's alert and generally a very happy contented baby when she's awake so no other signs that anything is up.

my 6 month old wasn't far off that. think he managed a bit longer awake in the afternoon, but not much. but then i was on a/d's for depression and they had drowsiness as a side effect and he was bf so i wonder if that made him sleepy too.

i panicked like mad that he would sponatenously combust when i went back to work and he went to nursery as he wouldn't get as much sleep. he was fine tho - and it did help his stamina.
