Standing up and screaming or fast asleep ...

These are the only two states that my 12 month old is in in his cot. He wakes at least 2 or 3 times a night. I am still feeding but he is not fed to sleep and I don't feed him everytime he wakes (only because it makes no difference!). The first time he might go back down ok after being picked up and then held until he is asleep but after that he just won't go back in his cot. As soon as he is picked up he goes back to sleep but the minute you put him even if he appears to have been fast asleep for 15 minutes down he jumps up and screams. How can I get him in the cot partly awake or to do shush pat, gradual retreat etc when he won't ever lie or sit in the cot unless he is asleep. Ironically, he was actually a great sleeper until 5 months when he learned to stand.

He has a bedtime routine, his cot is comfortable, etc...We do co-sleep in the end but am keen to limited it to the last part of the night as I have had a child in my bed for years it seems now.

My elder son was an awful sleeper too but would at least lie or sit for brief periods.

There are too many other people in the house to do controlled crying even if I was a fan but have no other ideas really now.

Any thoughts?
