BOOB ADDICTION!!

My DS is almost 16 weeks, and is very reliant on using my boobs as a comfort to go to sleep, and just doesn't know how to go to sleep without using them! I am battling against him trying to use a dummy, and he just fights it and cries constantly until I put him on the boob. What can I do?

My ds is 8.5mths and is still reliant on boobs to go to sleep! Why do you want to get him to sleep without the boob?

WigWamBam · 23/12/2005 12:10

My dd breast-fed herself to sleep until she was 2 - she's now 4.5 and has never had any difficulty putting herself to sleep.

He's still very young; it's really not a problem if he feeds himself to sleep at this age.

Hi Tatties, I don't mind him using the boob occasionally, but he is really heavy now 16.5 lb, and as I have SPD, and a bad back it is becoming painful to sit with him for almost an hour at a time. As soon as he has used me as a dummy and falls asleep he will sleep like a baby, but as soon as I put him in his crib, he wakes up and cries, so I try to comfort him, but he wants the boob, so back on we go! I am knackered!

The reason he wakes up as you put him down is because he can smell you!!! (I mean that in a nice way) He can smell milk so wants to be comforted by your boob!
My dd was the same..what I ended up doing was placing one of my used tops into her cot with her so she could smell me and it was as though I was still next to her. I also bought her a "cusky" doll which she uses as a comforter. I slept with it for months before she was born and she sleeps everytime with it now. She is 8 months and it stinks but hey if she loves it!!....

Hi I was going to suggest the comfort dolly thing too. Both my DD were BF and both of them have comfort dollies that I took to bed with me to get my scent. They are 4.5 and 2.5 now and they still have them. Before I discovered the dollies I used to take my PJ top off and wrap them in it, would probably be frowned upon by HV but worked for me.

Loopyredangel, you mentioned a bad back and ds waking up if you lower him into a cot. Can you bf him lying down in bed, then once he is asleep, sneak out of bed and leave the comfort thing in your place. I never actually got dd to accept a lovey and just stayed in the bed - we co-slept.

There is another current thread for tips for how to bf lying down.

Have you tried feeding lying down?
