Did learning to roll ruin sleeping?

My DD has just mastered rolling and it is all that she wants to do when she is put in her cot, having previously blethered away and then fallen asleep for her naps. Now she is rolling, rolling and rolling and getting overtired and screaming.

Did you have this problem and how long before it passed? (please tell me it passed!)

Yes I had this with every major development, rolling, sitting, crawling, eating with fingers (acted out in sleep), talking etc. It lasted a few days except the talking which is ongoing BUT I would try limiting her range for movement if she is actually finding rolling better than sleep. Try putting large rolled up towel in the way so she actually can't roll around.

It sounds like she would benefit from a bit of "wearing down", by which I mean limiting stimulus and getting her quiet through holding, rocking, lullaby etc before putting her down.

Agree with mama- put a rolled up towel on either side to prevent her from rolling.

Thanks for the response. She does get a good wind down, but if she doesn't fall asleep quickly enough once in cot, the rolling starts. I tried keeping my hand on her tummy to stop the rolling, but she got furious. Gah!

Oh, I like the idea of the towels, but I think she would just pull them out (she is 12 months). Might be worth a shot though

The rolling was only a major issue for us for about a week, maybe a week and a half. Now DS is put down onto his back and immediately rolls onto his side against the bars where he sleeps all night (hah, I wish he slept all night!). I found him in some strange positions until he found one that suited him though.

No point using the towels to stop her, in a couple of weeks she'll probably start standing up.

Then bouncing.

Then a combination of rolling, standing, bouncing...

Rolling was a pain but my DS stands up in the cot now and bounces on the mattress so getting him to sleep is a long, drawn-out process.

On the bright side, once he worked out how to roll onto his side and his front in his sleep, he started to sleep for much longer stretches and settle himself when he woke in the night. He's not sleeping through, but he only wakes once on a good night, which is a massive improvement on before.

Thanks all. She has been sleeping on her side for a while. It is the manic flipping like a pancake that is causing the problems. I hope the novelty fades soon

How old is she? Rolling for us meant DS would flip onto his front and sleep for more than two hours at a time

Iggly She is 12 months. She rolled a few months ago, never did it again and has a new passion for it now.

Can you try letting her sleep on her front and keep your hand on her that way?

She tries to crawl when she gets on her front or gawks around and grins like a maniac before getting very angry. I feel like I am dismissing all suggestions!!!

DS does that. Drives me nuts. I try to just feed him into oblivion these days so that he's too zonked to move

Count I think I am going to have to try that. I was trying to cut down her milk as her solid intake is not great, but will try getting her milk drunk. And hopefully she is too full to move
