Do babies have nightmares?

My 18 wk ds has started waking from sleep with a piercing scream as if he's being murdered!! It has me leaping up across the room, sometimes he just goes back to sleep with a dummy and shushing, other times he needs cuddling as he's so upset. What the heck is going on? Do babies have nightmares? And what could possibly upset him so much? He doesn't usually cry like that.

Wind maybe? Seriously he could be getting stabbing pains from it.

Both my dd's have done this from very tiny and it can be distressing. I think it is perfectly normal though.

my daughter does this if she has a sudden pain, sometimes just them moving with the scream is enough to move the trapped air. It's not nice to hear I agree. I think young children can get night terrors but it's more likely wind at that age.
