Moving 2yo into single bed - am I mad?

So I'm expecting DC2 and am hoping to economise by using DS's cot for the baby, but this would mean moving DS into a single bed when he's just 2. Is this do-able or am I expecting too much of him? He's not a great sleeper at the moment - usually wakes at 4 ish and then struggles to resettle, although I have got 7 months before all this happens, so a lot can change in that time... Any ideas / advice anyone?

Watching with interest as I am in almost exactly the same position!

We did this when DS1 was just under 2 - he hated his cot and for a year previously had slept in his travel cot (with a decent mattress in) which he much preferred. He had one of those soft side bars to help him to stop falling out. But he slept so much better in his big bed...

I moved DD1 into a bed when she was just under 2, and it was a fairly easy transition. She was a reasonably good sleeper beforehand though. In some ways I found it easier to settle her in the bed because I could sit next to her for a cuddle or lay down with her for a couple of minutes.

I'd say go for it, and do it a while before the baby is due so he doesn't connect the two and feel pushed out. Make a big deal about him being a big boy, choose duvet cover etc with him and choose a quiet weekend so that if he finds it hard at first you can take it easy in the daytime.

I had to do the same and it was fine. DS was 19 mths when DD born. She had a bassinet for the first few months. Then we were going on holiday when DS 23 months and only one cot available, so he would have to sleep in a single bed. I started by taking the sides off his cot-bed at home so he would get used to it. Then on holiday we pushed his bed against the wall and had another mattress next to it and used a safety gate at this door to minimise risk of falling out of bed or going downstairs at night. Then after we got back from holiday we did the switch at home - put DS in a single bed with safety barriers on both sides and DD (4-5 months by then) in the cotbed. He managed to fall out of bed a couple of times the first few nights (somehow squeezed past the safety barriers) but has been fine ever since. Doesn't even come out of his room alone in the mornings - just calls for me when he wakes up, so I don't bother using a safety gate at home.

Oh, and also made a big deal about him getting the big boy bed for a while before it happened, and used the move to the big boy bed as an excuse to stop giving him milk in a bottle at bedtime - he got a beaker once went into the big boy bed (which he accepted fine and then lost interest in after a while).

My dd moved into a child size single when she was 2. She saw it one night, jumped in and that was that. She had seen a little friend of hers had a new single so that helped a bit I think.

Remember though once they're out of a cot, they obviously then have the option to climb out of bed if they choose.
