How do I stop her doing this?! DD has never been world's greatest sleeper and we spent the early months endlessly rocking her out, but after a little bit of sleep training at 7 months she developed a great pattern of crying it out for two mins then falling deeply asleep. Until she learned how to pull up to stand.

Now if I put her down awake she instantly twists round, no matter how tired she might be. She then pulls up to stand and goes immediately into full-blown hysterics, gesturing to be picked up.

So far i have tried:

  1. Leaving her to cry (20 mins is my max and anyway she ramps up the tension during this time);
  2. Soothing eg quiet singing, stroking, but not actually picking her up (20 mins again my max but apparently she can object for longer than I can bear!)
  3. Rocking her back to sleep then putting her down. Result. But I'd like her to be able to get back into the habit of self-soothing to sleep.

Anyone else dealing or dealt with this?

Thanks Katie, that does make me feel much better as I was just berating myself for totally bottling out of another battle today! Two nights ago it was awful: took 40 mins even to get her down asleep as she would wake the second she was laid down, then immediately slumber again in my arms. She then woke multiple times during the night, immediately standing up, and finally at 530 was up for the day. So yesterday I did both naps in the pram then got her to sleep in my arms at 7 before laying her down and TIPTOEING out of the room without breathing! Have just now got her down for morning nap but again it was only after rocking her to sleep - I tried about 5 mins of the stand-up/put down routine then lost my nerve in the face of another hour's battle. I've got things to do!

Anyway hello fellow sufferers, Levantine, breathe, woodlands, newbaby, & BR44. I think it's interesting how the two issues overlap ie standing up and feeding back to sleep. DD stands up before going to sleep at 7 even though she's just had a big feed - now that's the one I can't crack. Whereas in the middle of the night at least a bit of boob will get her to sleep again... So I'm not tackling the latter til I've sorted the former: ideally if I re-establish self-soothing then that'll sort both issues. Until another tooth comes along....

Courage, ladies! And good luck x
