Moving on from sleeping under just a blanket?

DS will be 1 soon and all guidlines say that this is when you can let them use a pillow and duvet instead of just blankets and sheets. Obviously with the hot weather I'm not planning on doing anything yet, but once is starts to get colder I'd like to know he is snug as a bug!

DS hasn't tolerated a sleeping bag since he could crawl (because it restricted him too much I think!) but he still wiggles out from under the blankets and ends up sleeping on top of them most of the time, sideways in the cot! I can't see him suddenly sleeping with his head on a pillow...

So how do you know when they are ready to use a pillow and duvet?

Why not try him with a fairly flat pillow and see what he / you make of it?
(DS (2.5) has only just moved to having plumper pillows.)

Although no harm in waiting until you think he's ready. DS didn't have a pillow until he was at least 15 months I think.

DD1 (2.3yo) has a pillow but doesn't use it. I think she manages to sleep under the duvet though. If he doesn't sleep under the blankets just dress him really warmly for bed.
