Swaddling

My DS is 11 weeks old now and in the last few weeks we have managed to sort his sleep out by swaddling him. If he isn't swaddled then either his moro reflex wakes him or his arms and legs flail about and he can't settle. With swaddling I can pop him down awake and he'll self settle most of the time.

I read something that said you should stop swaddling at about 14 weeks. Is this right? If it is, why? Will it do him any harm if I swaddle him until his reflex is less strong and he can control his limbs a bit better?

My DD is now 18 weeks and I still swaddle her when she is overtired, but I am trying to wean her off it. He is so young and if anything like my DD really likes the comfort of a swaddle, I really wouldn't worry about it for another month or so.

I can't remember when I stopped swaddling. I think it was once they could escape and it no longer worked. Grin

Lovely, thanks. I definitely don't want to stop yet, he won't sleep!

He is a bit of a Houdini some nights too Grin

I swaddled ds until about three months. I only stopped because he was too big for the swaddling and would fight his way out! He did have a couple of jerky nights sleep at first but soon settled down. As long as the swaddling keeps them secure I don't see why you can't keep doing it.
