Waking a newborn (6 weeks) to feed?

The HV said when she wasn't putting on weight to wake her every 3 hours to feed. However, if left she would sleep right through I suspect.

At what stage can you leave a baby sleep through as she is not always that hungry and I'd equate it to an adult fancying a snack when they wake in the small hours?

Thanks

I had this problem dd was seriously underweight sometimes we would both sleep through the alarm to feed her in the night! I would also sometimes get her up and she was impossible to wake her. We went to 4 hours or 4.5 at night because of this, unfortunately it did mean that she lost this ability to sleep long stretches once the weight piled on she was well into the habit of feeding at night.

If she's gaining weight and producing lots of nappies I'd let her sleep.

cheers.

She gets her 6 week check tomorrow so fingers crossed for more weight gain and a good nights sleep for me!
