Dummy or no dummy?

can you advise - should I get a dummy to help dd2 (1week old) to sleep? Dd1 never had a dummy but never slept well either and I need dd2 to sleep more than her sister. I'm roughly following the Baby Whisperer / EASY routine so dd2 often goes to sleep after sucking my finger rather than nursing.

My current thoughts are -
Pro dummy

  • might help her sleep
  • it might help when she goes to nursery (4 months ish)
Anti dummy
  • i might always be up in the night finding the dummy
  • one day I'll have to make her give up the dummy
  • I think dummies look ugly

What are your experiences of dummies for sleep? And if I do get one, what brand?

Thanks.

i love my ds dummies! but like you i was very hesitant to introduce it for sleep. But it helps him to sleep through the night so i am keeping it! Also it gives him a lot of comfort when he is sick, teething or generally a bit upset. he is now 11 months old.

Sometimes he uses it during the day and sometimes he is not bothered.

It did take a bit of 'training' when he was about 6 months old to help him learn to put it back in when he was sleeping. eg we started by putting it in his hand and then when he got the knack of that i put it next to him and then he was fine finding it by himself in the dark. But prior to six months i don't think he would have been able to do this.

Also i like the mam brand, they are cool looking, have a non-slip surface on them so they stay in longer and are easy for my ds to pop in and out.

not sure how I'm going to wean him off it but figure i'll wait until he is at least 2 before I cross that bridge!

NO DUMMIE!!!

I gave my DS one to "help him sleep" he continued to spit it out then cry for it for about 4 months!!! Now he has a favourite dummie and will not ever try another one, its manky and old!!

He's 7 months and will sleep from 7-7. But, wakes about 4-5 times for his dummie. He's not really awake, but wimpers for it!

Agree with the comfort thing, he's ill at the moment and his dummie does sooth him.
