Sleep help

My little man is 8.5 months old and is a reasonably good sleeper. We have a routine in place at 6.30pm we bath him, give him a bottle at 7pm beside his cot, with low lighting and a lullaby cd playing quietly in the background. He does go to sleep more or less straight away. We are still however rocking him to sleep. He usually then wakes up anywhere between 12-3am and I have been bringing him into bed with me, so that I get some sleep. Sometimes he is hungry, but I think he is just waking out of habit. He is then awake for the day at 6am.

Does anyone have any advice of how we can move away from rocking him to sleep to getting him to fall asleep on his own? When I do lay him down in his cot when he is awake, he just turns over and moves around. Eventually he stops playing in it and then cries and I again rock him to sleep.

I would be tempted to do a gradual reduction in rocking/motion over several nights so that by the end of the week you are helping him sleep with the least interaction possible. You can then progress to putting him down almost asleep a few nights, then just drowsy. Takes time, but often works.
