18mo - sudden early waking really upset

18mo DS2 has been sleeping through (mostly) for about a month. He usually wakes about 6am, sometimes a bit later. He was ill last week (temperature, generally a bit rubbish) which messed up his sleeping a bit, and then for the last four days he has woken at 5am.

The first morning I thought it was because he was ill, so after 10 minutes of trying to settle him I brought him into bed with us and fed him. He fed lazily for about an hour, and then was ready to start the day at 6am.

The last three days he's been definitely much better, so no milk before 6am - but we haven't been able to settle him, so we've just been trying for up to an hour, and then bringing him into bed for morning milk at 6am.

There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with him - no dirty nappy, no obvious pain, he's eating normally so I don't think he's especially hungry. I really, really don't want 5am to be the new normal wake up time - 6am is hard enough. Is there anything I can do?

Doctor Richard Ferber's Book 'How to Solve your Child's Sleep Problems' has answers to everything to do with sleep from birth to 18! Beg, borrow or steal a copy from someone or somewhere.
