9 month waking during night

DD has slept through night since 4 months but past week has been wakening at all hours. She is still tired and will sleep in my arms if nurse her but as soon as put her back in cot she starts crying again. I have had to give her a bottle past few nights which sends her back to sleep which I dont want to start getting her used to it again. Trouble is I dont know if its her mouth thats sore and she also seems to he passing a lot of wind which could be hurting. Anyone have any ideas on settling her without a bottle?

my ds slept through since four months too and started waking at six months and now does it periodically. When he started waking I was getting really stressed and I am sure that made it worse. He did finally get two bottom teeth within days of each other but not until eight months. We are waiting for the top two teeth to arrive and we have only had two weeks respite inbetween teeth! Not entirely sure it is teeth causing the waking. i don't go into his room anymore as it used to make him scream more. They change sleep patterns all the time - I hope by the time ds is 21 he won't wake up and cry!

ha..ha...thanks suss. I'm sure by time their 21 it'll be us waking up crying!!

dd got second tooth so hoping she will calm down again. It was just so different from first tooth, that didnt wake her during night. Stopped giving bottle now which is main thing didnt want her getting used to that. Just the occassional scream now which settles quickly and usually on her own.

What as they come home after clubbing til dawn! Glad to hear things are a little calmer- we are still waiting for top teeth to arrive. Ds slept only for 40 mins after lunch I think he banged into the side of the cot. - v tired at bedtime, which means he wakes 30 mins after going to sleep screaming only for a minute but it is distressing. I spoke to a paediatrician ( hope spelling ok) today who said that after first top & bottom teeth the others (until molars) are not as disruptive so desperate for teeth to arrive so that we can go out again! daren't get baby sitter at the moment!

I've heard that too - thank g0d - think I would be bald if we had this for every tooth only I was told they just pop through after first couple so was expecting to get better after bottom two...heres hoping I get a wee rest for couple of weeks before dd top two think of making an appearance.

Hope your ds top two come through soon. Oh what fun I have to look forward to.

some still aren't sleeping through at a year, so you are lucky you've had some unditurbed nights.

If it was me, I'd just give her her bottle if it settles her. We found a bottle of cold water settled ds (I think it soothed his gums). Alternatively, you can sit with her until she sleeps. Controlled crying is not recommended for this age. However, if we were desperate with ds we would sometimes time him crying and give him 10 minutes. Generally he fell asleep within a minute or two, but if he got to 10 minutes, we'd get him up, feed him, change or whatever needed to be done.

Resorting to calpol tonight - as advised by paediatrician as last two nights ds has woken atleast five times and has been miserable the last couple of days! I am sorry for all those of you out there that haven't had sleep for a long time, but I have to say that having a few good nights rest and then broken sleep is exhausting and personally I think I would rather have broken nights or sleep not both. LynnC let me know when those teeth are through!

Suss - how was your night? You poor thing, did calpol do the trick? Hope it eased ds pain and managed to get a better sleep. Any sign of those top two yet?

Would also like to say I agree - was not my intention to be unsympathetic to anyone who doesnt get a sleep but you get into a routine whether your up for regular feeds or sleeping through you get used to one or the other. My original point was not complaining about getting up but unsure what was wrong in first place and not wanting to get her used to night feeds again.

One glimmer of hope is that this is usually a phase that does pass (I know it is shattering when it happens though).

Thanks KK - my night not too bad, only up once and just cuddled her for about 10 mins then she nodded off again thankfully. She was rubbing her mouth all morning and shaking head so not sure if maybe more ready to come through or if she is just irritated with second bottom one thats just broken through. I know it will pass just being a first time mum probably over anxious and over protective.

Thank you thats all we can do and hope we do a good job. Hopefully suss will be catching up on some sleep. Maybe she only uses the site at night? I only manage during the day (when should be working!!) but only found it recently and so addicted already

Well, it is nearly midnight here in New Zealand. My 5-week old dd keeps me up pretty late!

Seriously, if you haven't tried bonjella, do give it a go. It numbs the gum. We used it on our ds all though teething. It was very useful when he was on solids and hardly any milk, because he stopped eating when teething (because of the pain), but one application of bonjella before meals meant he could eat ok without yelling the house down (poor mite!)

Oh g0d you'll be knackered too. How is your little one? Hopefully you'll manage to get to sleep soon.

I have got calgel (just the same) but she sucks it off right away and dont get much of chance to rub her gums. She must get numb tongue!!

Grace is 5 weeks old, and James is 2.5yo.

Grace is a very cuddly baby like both of yours. But James never was, so in a way I am glad to have one that likes to cuddle (except when I'm trying to get her to sleep at 3am).

She's just started to sleep three hours at a stretch. Although the other night she slept for ONE HOUR ONLY. That seems to have been a one-only event, though (thank goodness).

The last couple of weeks have been very tough, but in the last couple of days she has started doing a 15minute feed at night and falling right back to sleep (and staying asleep when put in her cot) - so I've got three hours sleep, short feed, then two or so hours sleep. Unfortunately, she cluster feeds from about 7 or 8pm till after midnight! Makes looking after a toddler rather a challenge!

I work from home, so have been trying to do a bit of that inbetween too (have not done very much).

Must be very tough having disturbed nights and still having to go out to work the next day!

Sorry - didn't mean to sound negative about the next lot of teeth . Bonjela worked for us in the daytime but I found Medised really good for the night wakings during periods of teething (you can add it to formula if you need to and is suitable from 3 months) as it has a mild sedative effect. My sister in law swears by teething powders - never tried them myself (not sure why??!) but you can get them at any pharmacy.
We're just waiting for the last 4 molars (which I have heard are the worst so wish us luck with those!

KK hope your asleep by now! Cant be easy with the cluster feeds in the evening especially if she is up so late too. Hopefully Grace is starting to settle into a better routine now and sleeping slightly longer.

thats ok spookyboo didnt scare me too much. I've never heard of medised will maybe have a look for that. Also tried powders (which again she loves sucking off finger!) but dont know if they really make much difference. Think maybe help settle a bit. Let us know how things go with molars - good luck

Hi LynnC, Medised is really a kind of infant Night Nurse, i.e. helps to dry up a runny nose and contains a decongestant but my HV suggested it when dd was teething and had a heavy cold and I've never looked back , having found it to work better than just calpol. It is usually behind the counter with the Nurofen and Calpol in a nasty pink box! Having mentioned Nurofen, that is also better (IMHO) than Calpol though I didn't try that until dd was 7/8 months old. Good luck!
