DS won't go to bed

DS (nearly 2.5) has recently moved into a toddler bed. We put a gate on the room, whch worked really well to start with and he would tell me that he was safe in his 'big boy bed'. After about a week we moved DD (8 months) into his bedroom (into his old cot). Maybe this was too soon? We were just desperate to get our bedroom back!

We carried on with the same routine of stories, milk and getting into bed. Anyway, not long after he started getting up - a couple of times for DH, but with me he just gets totally overexcited and won't settle for ages. It's driving me mad, as I'm not getting the precious 2 hours in the evening, and DH often has to work late, so it's not an option to just let him do it, unfortunately! What should I do? Do we really have to do the 'Supernanny'-style taking him back to bed 350 times in the first night etc? Just don't seem to have the patience at the end of a long, hard day

Any ideas would be great...
