My 8 wk DD has been sleeping in a moses basket since she was born and I am wondering when to move her to a cot. The reason being that she thrashes around wildly before - and more often than not - when she is asleep and as she is now big enough to kick and punch the sides of the basket she has started to wake more often in the night. However, the cot seems enormous for such a small person and so I wonder if it's too soon. Please can you let me know when your DDs/Dss started sleeping in a cot and whether you think 8 wks is too young.

Thank you!!

PS It will be in our room as is the moses basket (though it will be a tight squeeze)

Day 4 when we got home from the hospital - cot next to our bed.

DS had a moses basket and a crib. He was too big for the crib at 4 months and so moved to the cot which was in his own room.
I still used the moses basket as somewhere to put him in the living room until he was about 4 months. Then I put it on the attic as he used to thrash about so much I was afraid he would topple it over.
He didn't nap in moses basket past 8 weeks as I felt it was too small.

The moses basket lasted about 10 days and Boy hated it. He is 18 weeks now and just growing out of the crib beside our bed. We have been putting in his (huge) cotbed at bedtime 7pm(ish) and transferring him to the crib in our room when we go to bed, since about 8 weeks roughly, when 'bedtime' became something feasible.
This last couple of weeks, he has been having a dreamfeed at 10.30pm in his room and staying in the cot til much later in the night. There have been a couple of dodgy nights with teething and many wakings which are easier dealt with in our bedroom but seems to have gone away and now we're back to 1 feed overnight so hoping soon that will go as well and he will spend the whole night in his cot.

I think every child is different and if he is outgrowing the basket, go for the cot and see. Smile

Hi, I moved my DD's cot into our room at 9 weeks. She just became too big for her moses basket. The transition was easy - in fact my DD slept better as she was able to stretch her arms right out Smile

around 4 months. Should have done it sooner though as he hated the moses basket and only wanted to sleep on me. We should have just firmly decided to do either cot or co-sleeping and bypassed the moses basket. But he seemed so little in his cot!

about 4 months old with dd1 and 2 only last a few weeks

gecko - never

PavlovtheCat · 17/01/2011 20:49

peanut it is a bit mean to put it in the attic though. Is that so you don't hear him fall out?

TrinityMotherOfRhinos · 17/01/2011 20:49

*lasted

and it may hae been months not weeks but no longer than a few months

yama · 17/01/2011 20:49

Three months for dd and two months for ds.

PeanutButter99 · 18/01/2011 09:42

Hey Pavlov. You are exactly right. He made so much noise I couldn't hear the TV when he was in the living room. Now that he's in the attic I can watch films in peace :)
