Slightly strange sleeping issue in 6 month old

Hello, my son is 6 months old and has been been going all night without feeds since 18 weeks (his choice not mine). He has been sleeping through really well but for the last 6 weeks he has been waking after only 40 mins from going down and he screams the place down. We have the "10 minute" rule where we wait 10 mins and then go up to him and check his nappy and temp etc but he normally re-settles before we have to do this. He then will normally sleep through but will often wake after another 40 mins and then sleep through. He self settles at bedtime and at all of his naps and is able to nap for longer than one sleep cycle.

I know its not a major problem but he always sounds so distressed and it doesn't seem to be improving. The nights when we do go up to him he'll always wake again and be worse so we try not to now if we know he is ok and not ill.

Anyone got any ideas or suggestions or is anyone going through the same thing?

Thank you!

Update
I am so confused. Last night his routine was so messed up and he slept from 9.30pm straight through to 6am IN HIS OWN COT! Woo hoo. We left mums last night at 8, got home, hads LOTS of boobie then DS went to his cot at 8.45. He cried a few times and then....zzzzzzzz, ALL night. Happy days. Lets hope this is the start of how he means to go on.
Although I was up at 2am, looking for my baby and I made DH check on him at 5am!!
Right, we're going to have lunch now.
Can I ask, is DS your first baby?

Oh and by the way, I make my purees with water. And DS is back to swamping 7oz bottles :) Things are looking good, until the next stage kicks in Grin

He is indeed my first baby and is now driving me mad, he wont take his nap...

On the occasional night when DS has slept through I've woken up wondering whats happened as well...

PeanutButter99 · 17/01/2011 15:51

Don't make him nap then. Put him on the floor and make silly noises and faces and tickle him. It's much more fun that trying to make him do something he doesn't want to do. And his little laugh will make you feel good too :)

HelenLG · 17/01/2011 15:55

Sadly, when he's tired he wont do anything, he wont play, he wants cuddles but then as soon as you pick him up he wants to go down, he has tantrums and throws things across the floor.

He is as good as gold when he's had his sleep, but if he misses it, its a knightmare, it is pretty much as bad as being in a dark room trying to get a crying baby to sleep.

To be fair, he's been in his jumperoo and is content just slowly demolishing it...

Hehe. Does he nap in his cot? I can't remember the last time DS napped in his cot. When I have him I rock him to sleep then put him on the sofa and pull the recliner out. Sleeps anything from 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours. Or else in his pram or car if we're out and about. When dad or DH has him they let him nap on them the whole time, ggrrr.
Mum's very good. She puts him in his cot but then he only sleeps for about half an hour.

HelenLG · 17/01/2011 16:03

No, he always naps in his cot, too many distractions everywhere else.

Normally, he goes down in about 15 minutes, but not this avo, white noise didn't work either...

He also wont sleep for longer than 45 mins without intervention. He's looking pooped now, gonna try again...

PeanutButter99 · 17/01/2011 16:04

Good luck!

HelenLG · 17/01/2011 16:46

Done..had to take him in our bed and feed him to sleep though...haven't had to do that in ages.

PeanutButter99 · 17/01/2011 16:57

Good for you. Now you're free :)
I'm trying to work so I've put DS in his high chair with some cucumber, pear and baby biscuits. All I can hear is num num sounds and then a thud when the food hits the floor!

HelenLG · 17/01/2011 17:06

I dont understand how you can do work...I can barely get 5 minutes to myself whilst he's awake...last week I was trying to do my 20 minutes fo exercise whilst he was up and within 3 minutes he was arms up and whinging because I wasn't playing with him.

HelenLG · 17/01/2011 17:11

NOOOOOOOOO...that's not 45 minutes...FFS

PeanutButter99 · 17/01/2011 17:13

Dad is great. He's semi retired so takes him out for a walk on Mondays. He also looks after him 2 afternoons a week.
I try and do what I can on Sunday evening when DH is here and I do get a bit done when DS naps and even when he's awake. It's no where a full day but it's something and it means we don't have to put him in creche.

PeanutButter99 · 17/01/2011 17:23

BLW is so messy!!
The food is everywhere, even in his hair Hmm

PeanutButter99 · 17/01/2011 17:24

Oh, crossed posts. Hows your DS?

HelenLG · 17/01/2011 17:25

Ah ha ha ha, I win!!

BLW is indeed messy and scary bit it's quite rewarding to watch your little man eating food by himself.

HelenLG · 17/01/2011 17:27

He's asleep again for now, he woke crying which always means he's not ready to get up. But I white-noised him and he's asleep again for now. Probably means he'll be up later this evening, but who knows, DH puts him down so he'll probably be good as gold...

PeanutButter99 · 17/01/2011 18:46

DS gone to sleep now too, but a nap, not to bed! I'll wake him after 7 and then he should go down around 8.30. I'm at work tomorrow and DH has him so have to make up his fruit puree and his lunch. And clean up the mess DS made, and finish off my work, oh and make dinner and eat it! Aaahhhhh, and DH not home til 7.30!
