Too much sleep?

ds (11.5 months) has recently started having a morning nap again after months of not needing one.
He sleeps just over 13 hours at night from 7pm-8:30am ish
Then naps from 9:30am - 11am.
After lunch he'll sleep for another 1.5 hours ish.
When he's awake he's totally alert and cruising round the room, playing and crawling. But he's sleeping for over 16 hours out of 24 which seems to be more what newborns do.
Should I start waking him up earlier (I was a strict GF mummy till recently) or does he just need loads of sleep?

Maybe he's about to learn to walk. I think sometimes a big learning stage can make babies tired. And I think you are a lucky, lucky woman!
13 hours a night...I can but dream of it.

There was a message on a thread once saying how much sleep was needed, I don't think he's taking too much but maybe another wise old mumsnetter will confirm. Lottie has as much sleep at night as your little one, then naps again from 10.30am - 12.30/1pm and then might have an afternoon nap about 4ish, but I try and avoid that nap if possible or we never get anywhere!
Also he's probaly goiung back to napping now it's so much cooler. Lottie couldn't/didn't want to sleep when it got really hot but now she's going for really nice long day time sleeps.
Personally I never wake lottie up if she's sleeping and dodn't agree with that Gina Ford stuff about waking them.
I'll try and find that note about how much sllep each person from newborn - 100 need a day.

Can't find the one I was looking for but found another thread also entitled 'too much sleep' and every post on there seems to be saying to Dot1 who posted - don't worry / you're lucky / better than too little sleep/ swap kids with mine if yours sleeps that much sounds great etc etc etc!!
BTW - Lottie is 19 months and has about 14 hours a day, sometimes more sometimes less.
Also is he awake when you go in in the morning? He could have wokn at 5am and lay there quite happy for a couple of hours and maybe dozed off half an hour before you go in????

Bobsmum, my dd is 11.75 months now and she sleeps from between 7 and 8 am until at least 8am most days. She also has a 2 hour nap in the morning and sometimes a 1 hour nap in the afternoon too. I think maybe it's because they are suddenly so active with crawling etc that they sleep more soundly at this age. (just my cod theory)

I think you're all right, it could be all the new activity wearing him out. He only started to crawl a month ago (commando style - arms only) and on Sunday started "proper" crawling and cruising - he must be knackered having been a totally motionless baby for soooooooo long.

If he didn't hear dh's alarm clock in the morning he would sleep till 9am as he did for a fortnight on holiday - bliss!

He's just dropped off again now!

Ahh, great news about the crawling - bless him, little exhausted soldier!
