CC for bedtime only?

DS is 4 months and went into his own room and cot a week ago. Since then he's woken for feeds as usual (2-3 times a night) but for at least one of these has been awake for 1.5 - 3 hrs (didn't do this previously). He's not upset as long as we're in the room stroking/rocking him.

I think the problem is that he can't settle himself, as we tend to feed/rock him to sleep at bedtime. And during nightfeeds previously i was guilty of dozing off, only to wake an hour later. Of course DS was also soundly asleep and I'd just put him in his crib. Now I don't doze off and am trying to put him into his cot after 10 mins and he wakes again.

At 4 months I'm not confident he can go all night without a feed but need to get him to go back to sleep quicker, and perhaps to feed less often.

So my plan is to use CC for bedtime only, teach him to settle himself and then hope (perhaps naively)that he can use this skill if he wakes during the night (out of habit rather than for feeds) and for daytime naps too (not currently his strength either). Anyone know if this will work?

(sorry for lengthy, probably too much detail post!)
