My 5 month old still wakes for a feed in the night (as well as several other wakings!) Some people have suggested a dream feed before my other half goes to bed but I cant decide whether this is the right road to go down?? How will I know when he can thru the night on his own? And will it be a difficult habit to break?

I did a DF with my DD until 6 months when I stopped it.She used to take a full bottle so I was worried but she never woke after i stopped it.
My DS is 5 months & has a DF at about 10:30pm and he sleeps till 6 or 7.He is not that hungry though for his morning bottle,I guess because he is still full from the DF. So.....if he does wake I wouldn't feed him as I know he's not hungry.
Maybe try it for a week and see what happens?

you won't know until you try it- we tried with DD now 6 months, a month ago as she was waking everynight around 1am for food. Unfortunately it seemed to disturb her first stretch of deep sleep and she woke frequently after so after trying for 4 nights we left it... but it works for lots of friends of mine so its wort a shot. Our DD now is not waking until 3-4 so seems that she can go longer without food...

You definitely need to try it and see. We tried it (and it failed) with DS at 3.5 months. We tried again at 5 months, and after one night it started working quite well. DS is now 6.5 months and we still do it, although I'm hoping to wean him off it by the end of November.
